Why this works
Swaps & notes
Easy swaps
- Use pears, blueberries, or diced peaches.
- Use dairy-free milk and coconut oil.
- Replace walnuts with pumpkin seeds for nut-free.
Cook notes
- Old-fashioned oats give the best structure; quick oats are softer.
- Dice apples small so they cook through.
Storage
Refrigerate 5 days or freeze slices up to 3 months. Reheat with a splash of milk.
Questions
Can I assemble it overnight?
Yes, but the texture will be softer because the oats absorb liquid. Refrigerate covered and bake in the morning.
Can I make it less sweet?
Reduce maple syrup to 1/4 cup; the apples provide additional sweetness.
Can I use steel-cut oats?
Not in this formula. They need more liquid and a longer bake.
