Capacity labels are confusing. Here is how to choose based on the food you cook, not the number printed on the box.

Start with surface area

Air fryers work by moving hot air around food. A wide basket often feeds a family better than a tall basket with the same quart rating because food browns best in a single layer.

For one or two people

A 4- to 5-quart basket is usually enough for two salmon fillets, a batch of vegetables, or reheating leftovers. It is compact and fast, but large recipes will require batches.

For three or four people

Look around 6 to 8 quarts with a broad square basket. This is the practical middle: large enough for four chicken cutlets or a useful amount of potatoes without dominating the counter.

For five or more

A dual-basket model or toaster-oven-style air fryer is often more useful than one extremely deep basket. Two zones let protein and vegetables finish at different temperatures.

Features worth paying for

Choose an easy-to-clean basket, a visible temperature range, replaceable accessories, and controls you can understand without a manual. Wi-Fi is optional; usable surface area is not.
